As a newcomer to this beautiful country I'm looking to involve myself in the most typically Argentine pursuits. I've been to an ´asado` and I've filled my belly with facturas. However the one thing I've yet to do is go to El Superclasico. Even in England we realise that this is the biggest and most passionate game in the world apart from Tottenham vs Arsenal of course.In the Observer they did a list of the top 50 sporting events you should go to before you die. El Superclasico is number 1.

Of course i agree, it´s the greatest spectacule to watch. I went to my first Superclasico last year and it was amazing. All the anticipation and the best part was when River scored, the crowd went CRAZY!

Oh yes, almost everyone in Argentina says the Superclasico is one of the most faboulous spectacule to watch. I don´t totally agree, because a match between this boring teams couldn't be so atractive. But for turists it is.
ReplyDeleteI'm not much of a fan of watching other people playing sports, but if there's a sporting event to be watched live, that deffinitely is el Superclasico. Mainly because of the fans' emotion, their chanting, etc., rather than the actual match. Be careful, though, some people (the Barra Braba) simply go to fight with other fans.
ReplyDeleteI have never been to this event, but I've been told that is spectacular. However, I must say that every "superclasico" in Argentina is a particularly magnificent event. I've been to the Gimnasia y Esgrima (the team I support)Vs Estudiantes, and it is something I won’t forget for the rest of my life.

Yeah I had a look at the prices for this weekend's El Superclassico and the best price I found was USD400!!! If I went I'd be eating bread and water for the rest of the month. Perhaps as Manuel said it has become too touristy. What other local derbies are there in Buenos Aires that I could attend?

I also attended my first, and hopefully not last, superclásico last year. For me, the build-up and the atmosphere was the highlight, with the match itself failing to realy take off. It was a great experience, but sadly I´ll just be watching on telly this time round.

the other derbies in Buenos aires are:

San Lorenzo vs Huracan
and there is a derbie in Rosario between Rosario Central and Newells which is known to be also fantastic
I intend to see them all while I'm living in Buenos Aires. Does anyone have any predictions for the match? Having just lost 3-0 to Tigre you've got to wonder if Boca have the confidence or quality to win. However in derbies the form book goes out the window. I'm seeing a 3-3 draw with Martin Palermo scoring with his head at both ends for Boca and River (own goal)!!!

ReplyDeleteI think this is not just a match. It makes Argentina stay still and a lot of things depend on in, such as some people's jobs. There's the betting, the mocking, the happiness. Even if you don't go to the stadium it is great. It was a fair desicion to put it off as it is so important that it should be played in the best condition available.

Even though it is said that this type of events are made to keep people focussed in something different to the daily problems, I think that "El Superclasico" is a distinctive character of our city.

The Superclásico is highly overrated nowadays. Both River and Boca are horrible teams and are in the last positions.
ReplyDeleteAs a clásico, Rosario's clásico is much better. It's an entire city divided in two and the environment is much more passionate than the Superclásico

I completly agree, it´s the greatest spectacle to watch. I went to the last Superclasico, it was fantastic, Boca`s fans (me included) didn`t stop chanting during all the match, and when we won, the atomosphere was terrific. I will never forget it.
