As you all know, today is el día de la Memoria in Argentina. I remember this day last year succinctly. It was my first visit to La Plaza de Mayo and I was overwhelmed by all the colours and emotion. No doubt, it'll be the same there this year and I'm interested in finding out how our students feel about this day and about mass protests in general. Are
you going to be at the plaza this year? Could the events between 1975-1983 happen again? Is protesting a good way to voice your concerns? If not, then what should or could be done?
Enjoy your day off (from classes and work) and I look forward to seeing your opinions on here.
Actually,we enjoyed this day very much! we went out with friends and with our boyfriends, but always thinking about what happened, hoping this horrible situation doesn't occur again!
ReplyDeleteJaky and Nati!
We really don't think that going to the plaza is necessary, you can be at your own home and still think about everything that happend between 1975-1983.
ReplyDeleteWe think that the events won't happen again, all depends on education. If we know our past, we can improve our future.
We believe that protesting in a peaceful way and not bothering other citizens is the way of being heard by authorities.
Valen and Flor.
In my opinion, I have another peception of what this day means. I can only remember that days, thirty four years ago at the school when every day we had to leave classes because some dangerous disturbs were taking place outside. It was like a war: two groups figthing each other and the other, the rest of Argenitine people trying to survive.

I feel like Silvia. I heard my mother's and grandparent's version and is like hers. They had to leave the country because they were thretened by some organisations because they were inmigrants, even they were not into politics. So I thing aobut these day in a completly different way...
Paula
I think this is one of the most important days in our country. We need to think about what happened and ask for justice. It's necessary to understand that was not a war, as Paula said. It was state's terrorism! The dictatorial government violate all human rights. There were 30000 missing people! They wanted all of us to feel fear, to divide us, in order to set a new economical plan, based on the financial and economic opening. With Martinez de Hoz as Minister of Economy, Argentina's debts amazingly increased and we are still paying this nowadays.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, we need to focus on education to make all people understand what happened in that period and this way these events won't happen again. Mass protests are a good way of voicing our concerns, but it was really sad that many political parties used this day as a political act, instead of making an only protest all together, remembering all who died or are still missing. It didn't matter if you agree with peronistas or radicales, we all want the same!
Interesting point Seba. Yes, it does feel like lots of people here do want the same thing. I'm not from here and have lived here for only a year but it certainly feels like most of the complaints are about the same things as always. What would it really take to make a profound and lasting change in Argentina? When will the día de la memoria stop being a widespread claim for justice to the parents and families of los desaparecidos? Will that day come? I'm not sure it will anytime soon...

I agree with Seba, and also those who talk about education. Although we all want the same, nobody realizes it. Argetina needs a good basis on education in order to stop making the same mistakes we did in the past. Many people say that Argentina is one of the only countries who doesn`t learn of it own mistakes.
ReplyDeleteI concur with Jacqueline about the need to go to the plaza, as she does, I think that the deep thinking can take place at home and not just in a socialy accepted place. But I must emphasise tha this IS a day of deep thinking, and answering steve's question, there is no magical formula for a profund and lasting change, every one has to act according to his own principles, and those have to be tought at school and at home.
ReplyDeleteI personally think that going to plaza de mayo on these kind of dates is very important. Seeing all that amount of people in the streets claiming for justice is very touching and keeps fresh the memory.
ReplyDeleteSofi
Well, I am commenting here although we are in April and this date has already passed, because I think it's a very interesting topic. Personally I believe it is one of the most important dates in Argentina, because it left a mark in a lot of people's life.
ReplyDeletePersonally I don't have any familiar of friend who is disappeared, but my parent know some people that they do have someone in their family in this situation. Tht'a why I went to Plaza de Mayo and took part in that process. I think it is really important to teach kids and students about this date. That is the way we can avoid makeing the same mistakes and letting it happen again.
Agustina
I agree with Agustina. We have to talk to kids and students about what happened so we don't make the same mistakes we have already made.
ReplyDeleteThe purpose of this day is to remember what happened so that we make sure it won't happen again, just like its tittle says.
